ILNAS publishes new white paper: Digital Trust for Smart ICT

On the occasion of World Standards Day, and directly related to the theme adopted this year by European and international standardisation organisations, that is to say “Standards build trust”, the Luxembourg institute for standardisation, accreditation, product and service security and quality (Institut luxembourgeois de la normalisation, de l'accréditation, de la sécurité et qualité des produits et services - ILNAS) has published a new White Paper “Digital Trust for Smart ICT”, with the support of the Ministry of the Economy.

This document contextualises market needs in terms of digital trust in order to facilitate the adoption and generalisation of Smart ICT, and more specifically the Internet of Things (IoT), Cloud Computing and Big Data. These developments, promising exponential economic, social and technological potential, require a high level of trust, when it comes to privacy, integrity or availability issues. Standards and technical standardisation, a common language by definition, provide a suitable response and a consensual framework in order to satisfy that need for trust.

As part of the national standards strategy, ILNAS, the Luxembourg standards body, has developed this new White Paper "Digital Trust for Smart ICT", prefiguring the importance of digital trust and technical standardisation for the next generations of information and communication technologies, namely "Smart ICT".

This reference document examines recent advances in the area of digital trust for Cloud Computing, the IoT and Big Data through three complementary approaches:

  • a technical analysis describing the basic concepts of these Smart ICTs as well as existing work to support the development of digital trust for these technologies
  • an economic, prospective analysis of Cloud Computing, the IoT and Big Data providing an overall view of their importance in the European market and internationally, while considering the challenges of digital trust for their implementation
  • a summary of the standardisation activities for these Smart ICTs, providing a broad perspective of the key role played by this area in improving digital trust in this respect

Accordingly, the White Paper sets out, with an eye to value creation and technological development, to provide relevant knowledge so that the market may appropriate it in order to facilitate the implementation of a trusted digital environment, providing a favourable framework for the adoption and development of technologies and practices in the sphere of Smart ICT.
