The discussions covered bilateral relations, the upcoming Estonian Presidency of the Council of the European Union as well as topical political events in Europe and globally.

The Prime Minister was pleased with the excellent bilateral relations between the Grand Duchy and Estonia, and said he felt there was substantial potential for further development, particularly in the field of ICT. “We are both determined to develop a wide-reaching digital policy and to invest in the digitalisation of our economies and our societies, for the benefit of our people and our businesses”, said Xavier Bettel. “The negotiations aimed at setting up an Estonian Data Embassy in the Grand Duchy are a real-life example of that collaboration.” He also said that “To advance digitalisation even further in Europe, it is absolutely essential to introduce a single digital market within the European Union.”

During his visit to Estonia, Xavier Bettel visited the e-Estonia Showroom, an exhibition illustrating Estonian innovation in terms of digitalisation and e-administration, which provided the Prime Minister with an overview of Estonia’s performances in this field, particularly with regard to the offer of online administrative procedures and national free Wi-Fi network coverage. “Estonia and Luxembourg are not competitors in the field of ICT – we are partners in a mutually beneficial alliance”, said Xavier Bettel during his visit.

At the end of his visit, Xavier Bettel was made an Estonian e-resident.
