At the opening ceremony of the Spring Fair on 23 April 2016, in the presence of their Royal Highnesses the Grand Duke and the Grand Duchess, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Economy Étienne Schneider gave a speech presenting the current economic situation in the Grand Duchy in a resolutely positive fashion: GDP progressed by almost 5% in 2015, the unemployment level fell to 6.5%, and paid employment in the Grand Duchy progressed by almost 3% over the course of one year.
In his speech, Étienne Schneider referred to the European project for implementing the capacity required in the field of high-performance computing (HPC) in the following terms: “High-performance, secure data centres offering excellent connectivity, and, above all, the infrastructures already today add to the international standing the Grand Duchy has an ICT location. Our aim in investing in high-performance computing is to take a very promising step forward. Luxembourg has an important role to play in the creation of a European network of high-performance supercomputers needed by fourth-generation research and industry.”
The project, initiated as part of the ‘Digital Luxembourg initiative, is being carried out in close collaboration with Spain, France and Italy, and constitutes one of the European Commission’s measures to promote the digital transition of businesses in the EU.
