On 21 March 2016, in the presence of Prime Minister and Minister for Communications and Media Xavier Bettel, LuxConnect celebrated the laying of its thousandth kilometre of optic fibre cable.
One of the missions entrusted to LuxConnect when it was created in 2006 was to create a dark fibre market in the Grand Duchy by deploying its own network serving the country’s data centres and industrial estates and by opening up capacity in a transparent and non-discriminatory fashion to any operator wishing to use it. LuxConnect has been contributing since 2010 to the Government’s ‘National Strategy for Ultra-High Speed Networks’ by connecting the incumbent operator’s POPs (points of presence) and by interconnecting isolated cable networks.
Edouard Wangen, Chairman of LuxConnect’s Executive Board, welcomed the exemplary collaboration with CFL, the Ministry of Public Works, the municipalities, the municipality associations, the operators of cable networks, the alternative operators, and – last but not least – with the incumbent operator and other public and private bodies in the deployment of optic fibre.
The Prime Minister welcomed the infrastructure investments made over the past ten years by stakeholders in the ICT sector in the Grand Duchy, channelled by public investments, which have helped make high-speed broadband a reality in the Grand Duchy. “Connectivity is the cornerstone of the economy and the digital society”, the Prime Minister said, adding that “fibre is not an end in itself – its deployment will give us a competitive edge, make life easier for everyone, increase productivity, and give rise to a host of new applications in the future”.
