"Luxembourg Institute of Health – A team of researchers were a about to make a crucial discovery, when suddenly … they disappeared!". This is the starting-point for the participants in an interactive experience lasting 2 hours, during which they will encounter a series of enigmas and physical challenges, will enjoy the thrill of piloting drones, will experience virtual reality, and much more.
The point of the game? To finalise the research that was being done by the scientists who disappeared in such mysterious circumstances.
Two hours of novel fun and games designed to familiarise the public with biomedical research and scientific culture – this is what the Luxembourg Institute of Health is offering with its "Science Quest", which is being held from 23 to 25 February 2018. The event will take place at the Tramsschapp, and is being organised in collaboration with IBBL (Integrated BioBank of Luxembourg), the Ministry of Health and the Fonds National de la Recherche (FNR), which is also supporting the event.
The participants, organised in teams of between 4 and 8 persons, will be guided through 11 successive rooms, living the adventure from start to finish. In each room, a short video will explain each scientific concept, which will itself be illustrated by activities, each of which is even more fun and original than the previous one. The event will reprise the rules of well-known games, such as escape games and adventure games, enabling the public to slip, not into the researchers' shoes, but rather into their lab coats!
Will the participants find enough clues in the abandoned laboratory to enable them to complete their mission?
This "Science Quest", which is aimed at both children and adults, will also offer the participants the chance to spend one-to-one time with the LIH's scientists, who will accompany them throughout the game.
The "Science Quest" will take place over three days, from Friday 23 February to Sunday 25 February 2018.
On the Friday, participation in the event will be reserved to children attending schools in the Grand Duchy.
It will be open to the wider public on the Saturday and the Sunday. All of the material distributed and shown during the event will be available in 3 languages (English, French and German).
"One of the tasks of the LIH is to promote scientific culture amongst the wider public, especially young people", explains Dr Ulf Nehrbass, CEO of the LIH. "We hope to bring it to their attention by means of this initiative, which is a really fun event unique to Luxembourg!"
The Ministry of Health will also be there, providing a "Healthy Corner" and offering the young, budding researchers an energy-giving snack. By means of interactive games ("Find the sugar ingredients hidden in the food"), visitors will also be given practical information about healthy, balanced eating and about the lifestyle habits we need to adopt in order to keep fit and healthy.
