The programme of Luxembourg’s presidency of the Council of the European Union is focused on digital technology at all levels. From July to December 2015, the issue of the place of digital technology in society will therefore be evoked transversally in the fields of healthcare, employment, intellectual property and competitiveness.
A major aim of Luxembourg’s presidency is to drive home the fact that Europe must be a leading player in the world digital revolution. For this reason, the country has made digital technology one of its priorities and is determined to elevate it at the very heart of its policy for the domestic market.
Although digital technology is not a separate sector in its own right, it is a tremendous “facilitator” which affects every field of activity. The switch to digital technology will benefit all sectors of the economy and presents numerous opportunities, by laying down the foundations of a genuine data and knowledge economy.
Luxembourg’s presidency will therefore foster initiatives in fields as diverse as fundamental freedoms (reuse and protection of personal data), telecommunications, cross-border e-commerce, online public services, research and innovation, employment, energy, industrial policy, transportation and education.
As evidence of its commitment to digital technology, Luxembourg’s presidency will focus in particular on digital skills, which it considers to be a key vector to improving the productivity of our economies, increasing their growth potential and improving their competitiveness.
