On the morning of December 11, students from local high schools arrived at Luxembourg’s annual 5G Conference, which gathered roughly 500 participants, both professionals and members of the public. After introductory speeches by Prime Minister Xavier Bettel and General Director of the European Commission Roberto Viola, this group of young adults gained a global overview of 5G deployment, nationally and around the world.

Event speakers presented the latest advances in 5G across Benelux, Asia, and the US. The morning closed with a series of discussions panels on the topics of communication and applications, infrastructure, and the impacts of 5G on health and the environment.

The second half of the day saw students join a side workshop where they exchanged ideas with a dozen professionals representing various industries and organizations, such as CFL, KPMG, Post, SnT, ICT Luxembourg, UpFoundation, LIST, the Ministry of Agriculture, IMS, EY Luxembourg, Cube 4T8, Circl, Competence Center and more. During their discussions, students went even deeper into the specifics of 5G, spanning agriculture, cybersecurity, health, multimedia and many others.

The workshop honed in on the jobs and skills that will result from the use of 5G in these areas. Through this dialogue, Digital Luxembourg and the Digital Skills and Jobs Coalition sought to give teachers, students and professionals the chance to learn from one another.
